Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy), a biography writer struggling to make ends meet, earns a living by writing short biographies of stars like Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, and Estee Lauder in the 1970s and 80s. As her popularity dwindles and she struggles to find a publisher, Lee finds herself unable to even pay her rent. Eventually, with the help of her loyal friend and accomplice Jack (Richard E. Grant), she begins forging letters from deceased writers in order to escape her desperate situation. However, it isn't long before she finds herself in trouble with the police.

In this film, Melissa McCarthy takes on a serious role, a departure from her usual comedic performances, and was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the film "Can You Ever Forgive Me?".
